5th day Tuesday 7th March

 Exploring Lincoln



Handy #6 bus stop outside the entrance, 20 minutes to Lincoln bus station. Quick breakfast (at Burger King, sorry), then navigate to Castle and Cathedral, via a VERY steep street, called, er, Steep Street, with 2 stops to catch breath. Couldn't have made it if I hadn’t done my month's Pilates beforehand. Castle guided tour was interesting and informative, including the  Victorian prison and viewing the real original Magna Carta, which had just been returned from conservation, and full circuit of the walls. I needed a coffee to recover enough to tackle the Cathedral, and be in time to light my customary two memorial candles, view the infamous Lincoln Imp, and be seated for a glorious Choral Evensong. Back down (hoorah!) Steep Street, then the bus back to camp, and another good dinner and comfortable sleep. I'd worked out how to manage the electric blanket using an inverter and a bit of a battery charging engine run, and I was incredibly cosy.

As I start this entry (relaxing with a cuppa and a Kit Kat) I'm in Tyndrum Holiday Camp, following a day of driving through Glencoe. Very peaceful here among the pines, with not much noise from the nearby A82. I woke early in my lovely spot at Onich Hotel car park and took my morning coffee down to the shore of the Loch before my (showerless) wash and brush up, then walked back up to the hotel for a great FSB with haggis and black pudding - the full McMonty. Chatted to a couple also in a campervan and compared notes. I was impressed by their experience with a diesel heater - maybe a project before I do any autumn/winter trips. My target for today was Glencoe, and I took the single-track back road which winds its way through incredible scenery. I don't know what the essential criterion is for something to be described as 'majestic', but these mountains simply are, and the gorges are, er, gorgeous. Sunday 30th April, W9D3

So here we are - end of my Great Spring Escape, appropriately finishing (almost) where it started, with Frankie and Dean and family in Letchworth Garden City. And today was very much a family affair, with Louis playing in a 'friendly' football match against a team in Harlow, Essex, a long drive away. The day was delightfully sunny, the game not so much! The teams were badly mismatched, the Harlow team by common consent from our touchline probably one or two divisions above Louis' Baldock, and this was reflected in the score (which I won't spell out), despite Louis playing his wee socks off, bless him.  The rest of the day was extremely lazy for me, less so for Frankie beavering in the garden and for her and Dean shopping and preparing dinner. I feel thoroughly pampered for my last day away from home. Wednesday 5th April, W5D6

As I'm about to leave the Scottish mainland again, on the CalMac ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, I thought it might be good to show how I got here, starting from Edinburgh, and not including my 5 days in the Orkney Isles.  What the Outer Hebrides hold in store for me, I'll only discover over the coming days. I didn't buy a return ticket, not because I'm planning to relocate here permanently (as one of Cate's family did), but because I may return by a different route, perhaps through Skye, and I still have no fixed timetable in mind. Meanwhile, I believe I do have a campsite for my first day(s), which is fortunate, because they asked me that at the ferry check-in, and informed me there is no 'wild camping' allowed anywhere on the islands, under council regulations.
