Tuesday 11th April W6D5
To quote Yeats 'A terrible beauty was born'. A fitting description for the road to and from Huishinish, but I survived the return journey without slipping off the edge (of the road, but not necessarily my mind! ).
Incidentally, I must say that apart from the lack of electric hookup, the facilities provided at Huishinish by the Harris Community were outstanding, with immaculate showers and toilets, and a large communal room with tables and chairs, facing the beach. And contrary to the warning notices, open and lit all night. And the charge is £10 overnight.
So now the sun was shining again, as I sat in the standby (is that an oxymoron?) for the 1120 ferry to Skye. They have a quite reasonable policy that motorhomes go to the very back of the standby queue, because we have somewhere to stay for the night.
And of course the inevitable happened. I was in the queue slowly approaching the ferry as they crammed in as many vehicles as they could, when the gate was closed just in front of me. Boo, chiz, but at least I tried, and I still have my ticket for tomorrow. And the silver lining is that after a phone call I was able to get a space at Talla na Mara, which I had visited the day before and found full. So here I was, in a great spot, with a view that would deliver a fabulous sunset on a clearer day. My neighbour, in another vw van actually lit his portable bbq before the evening wind got up.
I spent ages in the van uploading my dashcam videos to the laptop before the sd card runs out of space, something I should have done before now. I had fish and chips in the restaurant on site, and confirmed my camp at Uig on Skye for the next night. That is all assuming I can in fact get tomorrow's ferry, as I am hearing stories about problems with the other Islands boat passages because of heavy weather in the surrounding waters. It's possible they may have to divert our boat to Stornoway and give priority to freight, and only take what few passengers they can fit in. That's island life, innit, and I'll just have to hope for the best and make sure I arrive in time for the 0710 boat. To that end I've set my alarm for 0500, so it's now time to retire. Night night.
